‘Hurts a Lot’ – Frances Tiafoe Laments ‘Very Poor’ Display After Crashing Out of DC Open
Frances Tiafoe has always been open about how much competing at the Mubadala DC Open means to him as a proud DMV native, but the ATP 500 trophy has continued to elude him over the years. Given his emotional connection to the event, Tiafoe was crushed after crashing out in the first round of the 2026 edition.
What Frances Tiafoe Said After His DC Open Exit
No. 6 seed Tiafoe locked horns with Terence Atmane in the first round of the DC Open. The American entered the match with an advantage, holding a 3-0 lead in their head-to-head record, including a 7-6(6), 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win in their Wimbledon clash just weeks ago.
However, Atmane turned the tables in their DC Open showdown, mounting an impressive comeback to claim a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory and ousting Tiafoe from the tournament.
Tiafoe offered a frank assessment of his performance during his post-match press conference. Although the American credited Atmane for pulling off the win, he said his own “very poor” display had helped the Frenchman over the line.
“My respect to him for winning the match, but very, very poor from my side. I play every year, and I never performed how I have today. I was flat. Just wasn’t good enough. You know, give him credit, but I definitely helped him over the line,” Tiafoe said.
Tiafoe revealed that the loss hurt deeply, describing it as hugely disappointing given the high expectations he had set for himself heading into the ATP 500 event.
“Very disappointing. Especially for the year that I’ve been having, super disappointing. Honestly, that’s all I can really say. I had a lot of high hopes. This one hurts a lot,” he added.
Tiafoe’s dejected reaction came as no surprise, as he had emphasized during his pre-tournament press conference how much the event meant to him and how determined he was to lift the title.
“No, I mean, of course, you have a little more edge in this tournament, for sure. I know everyone so well. You know, all my friends, family are coming to the event. Wanting to put my name around the stadium. Knowing the owner of the event, knowing everybody else, it’s a lot. You want to do well. You want to win,” he said.
Frances Tiafoe still had the chance to clinch the doubles title at the DC Open, having formed a blockbuster partnership with Nick Kyrgios. However, the pair was forced to withdraw before their opening match after the American sustained a right wrist injury. Tiafoe will now turn his focus to preparing for the Canadian Open, which gets underway on August 2.
